FOYT WINS AT 2018 CHRONICLE WINE COMPETITION

Legendary auto racers were among the winners at the 2018 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition this year.

Judges for the largest competition of American wines in the world named the best American wines of 2018. After receiving 6,960 entries from 35 states, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition revealed the top wines.

Foyt Family Wines, no.93 The Final Lap, port-style dessert wine received the Best of Class award.

The wine gets its name in honor of the legendary A.J. Foyt's retirement from professional racing as a driver.

1993 Indianapolis 500 Pole Day. A.J. Foyt's attempt to compete in his 36th consecutive Indy 500 ended when he retired from driving Indy cars moments before qualifications began. Prompted by teammate Robby Gordon's crash that morning, Foyt, 58, decided to focus solely on his young driver. It was arranged for Foyt to take a bitter-sweet final lap around the 2.5-mile Brickyard as 200,000 fans saluted him with cheers-- and tears.

Notes on the wine:

This luscious medium-bodied dessert wine, created in a classic port-style is a beautiful balance between ruby and tawny ports. Fortified with grape brandy and aged five years in oak barrels, the Final Lap dessert wine is Amber in hue. On the nose, one gets a waft of dried fruits with a subtle nuttiness that soon follows. These flavors persist onto the palate along with a rich, smooth mouth-feel. Black currants, hazelnuts, and Marcona almonds envelop the palate with the creamy texture of the wine. Drink now through 2040.
